Concrete cancer is a serious problem that occurs within concrete and it is caused by the steel reinforcing inside the concrete rusting over time. As the steel rusts it expands, displacing the concrete around it, causing it to become brittle and crack.

Spalling is the result of water entering brick, concrete, or natural stone. Dissolved salt is carried through the material in water and crystallizes inside the material near the surface as the water evaporates. The word Spall describes the chips or fragments of a material that is broken off a bigger object.

Fretting where the surface of the brick progressively spalls off. Caused by water migrating in the wall and transporting salt to the brick surface where it forms crystals that grow in voids in the brick and break off from the brick surface as they expand.
